How can we help?
Search our most asked questions, or get in touch and we will help you personally.
Orders and delivery
How long will my order take?
Almost everything we sell is made to order in Britain, so the lead time depends on the model and the fabric you choose. Pieces from our standard collection are usually quicker than bespoke and made to measure orders.
We will give you an estimated delivery window when you place your order and keep you updated as your piece is made. If you need your furniture for a particular date, tell us before you order and we will let you know what is possible.
Do you deliver to my area?
We deliver throughout England and Wales and to much of southern and central Scotland. Enter your postcode at checkout and the delivery charge for your address is worked out and shown to you before you pay.
Thirteen postcode areas sit outside the calculator: PA, KA, DG, FK, KY, PH, DD, AB, IV, TD, TR, KW and BT. If yours is one of them, email enquiries@richdalesofas.co.uk with your full postcode and we will quote you by hand. There is more on our delivery page.
Will you bring the furniture into the room I want it in?
Yes. Our delivery team will place your furniture in the room of your choice and take the packaging away with them.
Please make sure doorways, hallways and stairs are clear before we arrive. If access is tight, measure your route and tell us beforehand. Many of our sofas can be made with removable backs or feet so they fit through awkward spaces.
How will I know when my order is ready?
We will call you as soon as your order reaches us so we can arrange a delivery day that suits you. If your phone number changes, or you need to delay delivery because of building work or a house move, just let us know and we will hold your order for you.
Can you take away my old sofa or bed?
Ask us when you place your order. We can often remove and dispose of your old furniture on the day we deliver, and we will confirm any charge in advance so there are no surprises.
Bespoke and made to measure
What does made to measure actually mean?
Our Long Eaton range is bespoke furniture, designed by us and handcrafted at our workshop. We can alter the height, depth and width of any sofa or chair so it fits your room and the way you like to sit.
Seat firmness, cushion filling, arm shape, back style and leg finish can all be chosen as well, so no two orders need be the same.
How does the bespoke process work?
It starts with a conversation, usually in our showroom, where we talk through size, style and comfort and put fabrics in front of you. We then confirm the full specification and price in writing before anything is made.
Your piece is handcrafted to that specification and delivered into the room of your choice. You can read more on our bespoke page.
Do I need an appointment for a bespoke consultation?
It helps. When you book an appointment we set aside proper time to go through sizes, fabrics and comfort with you without interruption. You are also very welcome to call in during our open hours and we will help if we can.
Can you match or replace a sofa I already own?
Often, yes. Bring us the measurements of your existing piece, or photographs of it, and we will talk through how closely we can match it. Because we build to your dimensions rather than to a fixed range, we can usually recreate a size that is no longer sold in the shops.
Is bespoke much more expensive?
Less than most people expect. You are paying for the size, fabric and comfort you actually want rather than for a compromise, and the price is confirmed in writing before you commit. Tell us your budget at the start and we will be straight with you about what it will and will not cover.
Fabrics and swatches
Can I see fabric samples before I order?
Yes, and we would encourage it. Colours change enormously depending on the light in your own room, so it is worth living with a swatch for a few days before you decide.
Browse the range on our fabric swatches page or ask us in the showroom.
How many fabrics do you offer?
Hundreds, across plains, weaves, velvets, chenilles and patterns, in a very wide range of colours. If you have seen a fabric elsewhere that you love, tell us the name and we will check whether we can order it in for you.
Which fabric is best for a busy family home?
Look for a hard wearing weave with a high rub test, and consider a mid to dark tone or a textured finish, which hide everyday marks far better than a flat pale colour. Some fabrics are also available with a stain resistant treatment.
Tell us how the room is used, including children and pets, and we will point you to the fabrics that will stand up to it.
Can I supply my own fabric?
In many cases yes. Bring us a sample or the details and we will check that it is suitable for upholstery and work out how much is needed.
Beds and mattresses
What beds do you sell?
We supply British made divan bases, mattresses and headboards in sizes from single through to super king, with a choice of fabrics and colours so the base and headboard can be matched or deliberately contrasted.
How do I choose the right mattress?
Tension is personal. The right choice depends on your weight, whether you sleep on your back, front or side, and whether you share the bed with someone of a different build.
The only reliable way to choose is to lie on them. Come into the showroom and we will talk you through the spring types and fillings and let you take your time.
Do headboards match the bed bases?
Yes. Our headboards come in the same fabric range as the bases, so you can match them exactly or choose a contrasting colour if you prefer.
Do divan bases come with storage drawers?
Most of our divan bases can be ordered with drawers, and the number and position can usually be chosen to suit your room. Tell us which side of the bed is against a wall and we will make sure the drawers open where you need them.
Changes, returns and guarantees
Can I change or cancel my order?
Get in touch as soon as you can. If your piece has not yet gone into production we can usually change or cancel it without difficulty.
Because our furniture is made to order, and bespoke pieces are built to your own specification, changes are not always possible once manufacturing has started. We will always tell you honestly where your order stands.
What if something arrives damaged or faulty?
Tell us straight away and send a photograph if you can. We will arrange for the piece to be looked at and put right, whether that means a repair, a replacement part or a replacement piece.
Your furniture is covered by a manufacturer's guarantee and your statutory rights are unaffected.
Do I have to pay a deposit?
Yes. Orders are confirmed with a deposit and the balance is due before or on delivery. The amount is set out clearly on your order paperwork before you commit to anything.
What if I change my mind after delivery?
Please contact us and we will do what we can to help. Made to order and bespoke furniture is built to your own choice of size and fabric, so it does not carry the same change of mind rights as a standard off the shelf purchase.
Anything faulty, damaged or not as described is a different matter entirely, and we will always put it right.
Is my furniture guaranteed?
Yes. Your furniture comes with a manufacturer's guarantee covering the frame and the workmanship. The exact length and cover depend on the maker and the model, and it is set out on your order paperwork. Keep that paperwork safe, as it is the quickest way for us to identify your piece if you ever need us.
Visiting our showroom
Where are you and when are you open?
You will find us at The Old Co-op Building, 51a Wharncliffe Road, Ilkeston, Derbyshire DE7 5GF.
We are open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10.00am to 4.00pm. Monday to Wednesday and Sunday we work by appointment, and we are closed on bank holidays.
Do I need an appointment?
Not on Thursday, Friday or Saturday, when you can simply call in. On other days we work by appointment, and we are very happy to open outside our usual hours for a private viewing. Give us a call and we will arrange a time that suits you.
Can I buy everything on the website?
Our website shows a large part of what we make and sell, but no screen can show every fabric, size and option, and colour never photographs quite the way it looks in the room. If you cannot see what you are after online, call us or come in and we will almost always be able to help.
Do you sell anything besides sofas?
Yes. Alongside sofas, chairs and corner sofas we supply carpets, wooden furniture, beds, mattresses and headboards.
Care and aftercare
How should I look after my new sofa?
Plump and turn the cushions regularly so the fillings settle evenly, and vacuum the upholstery gently with a brush attachment. Keep the piece out of direct sunlight and away from radiators where you can, as both fade and dry out fabric over time.
Deal with spills quickly by blotting with a clean cloth rather than rubbing, which pushes the mark into the weave.
My cushions have gone soft. Is that normal?
Yes, some settling is completely normal, particularly with fibre and feather fillings, and it is a sign the cushion is doing its job. Regular plumping and turning brings the shape back. If a cushion is not recovering as it should, tell us and we will take a look at it.
Can you repair or re-upholster furniture?
We are furniture makers as well as retailers, so we can often help with repairs, replacement cushion interiors and full re-upholstery, including pieces we did not originally supply. Send us photographs and the dimensions and we will tell you what is possible and what it would cost.
Can I buy replacement cushion covers?
In most cases yes, provided the fabric is still in production. Have your order paperwork to hand so we can identify the exact fabric and cushion size, and we will let you know availability.
